​The story begins with teenage Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) moving to a new town with his mother, Molly (Maria Bello), the ninth place they’ve lived since his scientist father, Jim McGrath, died in a mysterious accident years ago. Max struggles to fit in, a situation made worse when he begins to exhibit strange powers: his body uncontrollably generates massive bursts of glowing blue liquid energy, known as TURBO.

​During an intense energy overload, Max is contacted by Steel (voiced by Josh Brener), a mysterious, cynical, and humorous techno-organic alien “ultralink.” Steel explains that he is an amnesiac energy-absorbing entity. When Max and Steel physically bond, Steel contains the powerful TURBO energy, forming a formidable suit of armored protection—and the hero known as Max Steel. Together, the two unlikely partners must learn to work together, constantly bickering while fighting off mysterious men in black suits who are attempting to capture Max’s power. They begin to unlock fragmented memories from Steel, which reveal the truth about Max’s father, Jim McGrath (Mike Doyle), and the shady N-TEK advanced research company now run by Dr. Miles Edwards (Andy Garcia). Max discovers that his father was key to controlling this energy and that a devastating threat of other hostile ultralinks is imminent.
