​Set in 2020, the sport of boxing has evolved: the human contenders have been replaced by towering, 2,000-pound mechanical warriors. Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is a down-on-his-luck former boxer who now scrapes by as a small-time robot promoter, constantly in debt and running from loan sharks.

​Charlie’s life takes an unexpected turn when he is forced to take temporary custody of his estranged 11-year-old son, Max (Dakota Goyo). The two have virtually no relationship, and Charlie sees the arrangement only as a way to secure a financial payoff.

​While scavenging for parts in a junkyard, Max stumbles upon Atom, an old, beat-up sparring robot built with a rare “shadow function”—the ability to mirror its controller’s movements. Max immediately takes a shine to the silent robot, seeing the potential that Charlie initially dismisses.

​With Max’s determination and technical know-how, and Charlie’s rusty boxing expertise, they train Atom, teaching him genuine boxing moves. The father-son duo—alongside the gym owner and Charlie’s love interest, Bailey Tallet (Evangeline Lilly)—begins a Cinderella run through the underground circuit and into the World Robot Boxing league, culminating in a dramatic, emotionally charged final bout against the undefeated global champion, Zeus.
