Directed by Jerry Zucker (Ghost) and featuring an all-star cast, the film offers a romantic and action-heavy take on the legend of King Arthur. Sean Connery is perfectly cast as King Arthur, the revered and wise founder of Camelot, who seeks a gentle end to his reign with his intended bride, Lady Guinevere of Leonesse (Julia Ormond).
The kingdom’s peace is threatened by the ambitious and villainous former Knight of the Round Table, Prince Malagant (Ben Cross), who wages a relentless campaign of terror against Arthur’s allies. It is during one of Malagant’s ambushes that Guinevere is rescued by Lancelot (Richard Gere), a highly skilled, fearless, but rootless swordsman.
Lancelot is instantly smitten with Guinevere, who is torn between her duty and loyalty to the noble Arthur—a marriage that will secure the safety of her people—and her undeniable, electric attraction to the dashing stranger.
Arthur, impressed by Lancelot’s bravery and spirit, offers him a seat at the Round Table, making him the King’s First Knight. As Malagant’s attacks intensify, Lancelot must choose between his growing, forbidden passion for Guinevere and his sacred oath to defend the king who has shown him nothing but honor. The film culminates in a dramatic final battle that tests the true meaning of chivalry and sacrifice.
