The Croods—Grug, Ugga, Eep, Thunk, Sandy, and Gran—along with Eep’s boyfriend, Guy, are roaming the dangerous prehistoric landscape in search of a permanent, safe place to call home. Grug (Nicolas Cage) is particularly distressed by Eep (Emma Stone) and Guy’s (Ryan Reynolds) plans to leave the pack and start their own life.
Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover a massive wall protecting an idyllic, highly advanced oasis. This paradise is home to the Bettermans—Phil (Peter Dinklage), Hope (Leslie Mann), and their daughter, Dawn (Kelly Marie Tran)—a family who are a few steps higher on the evolutionary ladder. The Bettermans live in an elaborate treehouse, enjoy fresh produce from irrigated acres, and consider themselves far more “civilized” than the crude, cave-dwelling Croods.
The Bettermans, who knew Guy’s parents, initially welcome the Croods as guests, but their true goal is to separate Guy from the “primitive” Eep and keep him to pair with their sheltered daughter, Dawn. As Grug struggles with his protective instincts and feels increasingly inadequate next to the sophisticated Phil, the two families clash over everything from individual space (which the Croods hate) to communal sleeping (which the Bettermans abhor). The rivalry reaches a breaking point when Grug breaks the one sacred rule: do not eat Phil’s prized bananas. This forbidden fruit consumption alerts a giant, dangerous beast—the Spiny Mandrilla—who kidnaps the men (Grug, Phil, and Guy) as a sacrifice. It is up to the women—Ugga, Eep, Gran, and Hope, who reluctantly unite and call themselves the “Thunder Sisters”—to put aside their differences, adapt their skills, and launch a wild rescue mission.
