The story begins at a terrorist arms bazaar on the Russian border, where James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) narrowly escapes a missile strike while hijacking a jet equipped with nuclear torpedoes. However, a GPS encoder is stolen by techno-terrorist Henry Gupta, who is working for Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce). Carver, a Rupert Murdoch-esque billionaire, uses the device to lure a British frigate into Chinese waters, where his secret stealth ship sinks it and shoots down a Chinese jet—making it appear that the two nations have attacked each other.
With only 48 hours to prevent a full-scale war, M (Judi Dench) sends Bond to Hamburg to investigate Carver’s media empire. There, he reunites with Paris (Teri Hatcher), an ex-lover who is now Carver’s trophy wife. The mission takes Bond to Saigon, where he joins forces with Colonel Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh), a highly skilled agent of the Chinese People’s External Security Force. Together, they must track down Carver’s radar-invisible stealth ship in the South China Sea before he can launch a stolen missile at Beijing to trigger a global catastrophe for the sake of “exclusive coverage.”
