Directed by Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), the film takes place four years after the events of the first movie, in 1956 France. A series of gruesome, unexplained deaths are plaguing the clergy across Europe, signaling that the demonic force Valak (Bonnie Aarons) is once again active and spreading its evil.
Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) is now living a quiet life in an Italian convent but is summoned by the Vatican to investigate the sinister pattern. Reluctantly, she teams up with the skeptical young novice Sister Debra (Storm Reid) to follow the demon’s bloody trail, which leads them to a former monastery, now a boarding school for girls.
Irene soon discovers that the kind, familiar face of Maurice (“Frenchie,” played by Jonas Bloquet)—the man who helped her defeat Valak years ago—is now a groundskeeper at the school. However, Maurice is unknowingly possessed by Valak, who is using him as a vessel to locate the Eyes of Saint Lucy, a powerful, sacred relic hidden somewhere in the building.
As Valak unleashes escalating terror on the students and staff, including teacher Kate (Anna Popplewell) and her daughter Sophie (Katelyn Rose Downey), Sister Irene must face the ultimate test of her faith, confront her own family’s mysterious connection to the saint, and find a way to exorcise the demon before Valak gains unstoppable, unholy power.
