The story kicks off with a deadly training exercise on the Rock of Gibraltar, where a 00-agent is murdered by an unknown assassin. Bond is soon assigned to Bratislava to protect the defection of General Georgi Koskov (Jeroen Krabbé). During the escape, Bond chooses to wound rather than kill a beautiful female sniper—Kara Milovy (Maryam d’Abo)—noticing she is a novice cellist rather than a professional killer.
After Koskov is spirited away to England, he warns MI6 of a new KGB policy, Smiert Spionom (“Death to Spies”), led by General Leonid Pushkin (John Rhys-Davies). However, when Koskov is “abducted” from an MI6 safe house, Bond begins to suspect a double cross. He tracks Kara to Vienna and eventually Tangier, realizing she is Koskov’s manipulated girlfriend. Together, they uncover a massive plot involving rogue American arms dealer Brad Whitaker (Joe Don Baker) and a scheme to use Soviet funds to buy diamonds and opium. The mission eventually leads Bond to the battlefields of Afghanistan, where he must team up with the Mujahideen to stop Koskov’s endgame.
