​The film opens with a devastating event: the Romulan mining vessel Narada, captained by the vengeful Nero (Eric Bana), emerges from a temporal anomaly and attacks the USS Kelvin, resulting in the death of James T. Kirk’s father and the creation of an alternate reality—known as the “Kelvin Timeline.”

​Twenty-two years later, we meet a young James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), a rebellious, thrill-seeking young man on Earth who is inspired by Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) to join Starfleet. At the Academy, Kirk quickly runs afoul of his logical, rigid science officer instructor, Spock (Zachary Quinto), particularly after cheating on the unwinnable Kobayashi Maru simulation. Their simmering rivalry is cut short when a massive distress call comes from Spock’s home planet, Vulcan, indicating an attack by the very Romulan ship that created the new timeline.

​As cadets, Kirk and Spock, along with Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy (Karl Urban), Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho), Scotty (Simon Pegg), and Chekov (Anton Yelchin), are quickly mobilized aboard the newly commissioned USS Enterprise. They must race against time to stop Nero from destroying entire planets and ultimately, Earth itself. The mission forces the human and Vulcan to set aside their differences and forge the legendary partnership that will define the fate of the Federation.
