The story is set into motion when canisters containing a radical, experimental genetic-editing pathogen (developed by the morally bankrupt corporation Energyne) crash to Earth after a disastrous space station incident. These canisters infect three animals across North America: a gray wolf in Wyoming, a crocodile in the Florida Everglades, and George, an incredibly intelligent, rare albino gorilla living in a San Diego wildlife sanctuary.
George’s best friend and caretaker is primatologist Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson), a man who prefers the company of animals to humans. Davis watches in horror as George mutates overnight into a colossal, aggressive beast. As the corporate villains, led by the ruthless CEO Claire Wyden (Malin Åkerman), activate a signal intended to lure the three creatures to Chicago for nefarious reasons, the city becomes the epicenter of a massive, destructive battle. Davis, teamed with discredited genetic engineer Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris), must race across the country, fighting their way past a shady government agent, Agent Russell (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and military forces. Their goal is not just to secure an antidote to halt the global catastrophe, but to save the sentient, fearsome creature that was once Davis’s best friend.
