The story introduces us to Ploey, an energetic and curious young golden plover chick born in Iceland. While learning to fly, Ploey witnesses a tragic attack by the huge, menacing peregrine falcon, Shadow, which results in the death of his father. Traumatized and overwhelmed by grief, Ploey develops a profound and paralyzing fear of flying, causing him to lag behind in flight school.
This fear proves disastrous when his family and the entire plover flock migrate south for the winter. Ploey is tragically left behind in the rapidly approaching Arctic winter. Alone in the desolate, freezing landscape, the flightless chick must embark on a perilous journey to survive and find the fabled Paradise Valley. Along the way, he encounters Giron (voiced by John Stamos), a cynical, loner ptarmigan who is wary of everyone but possesses the wisdom of a true survivor. Though their relationship is initially difficult, Giron reluctantly guides Ploey, who learns valuable life lessons about friendship, bravery, and self-reliance. As the vicious Shadow continues to hunt him, Ploey must eventually choose between remaining safely hidden or conquering his fear to finally fly and save his loved ones from the dangerous falcon upon their expected return in the spring.
