​Set amidst the hardship of the 1933 Great Depression, the story centers on Carl Denham (Jack Black), a desperate and obsessively ambitious filmmaker. He coerces a down-on-her-luck vaudeville actress, Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), and reluctant playwright Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody) to join his expedition aboard the S.S. Venture to film on a mythical island marked only on Denham’s secret map: Skull Island.

​Upon arrival, the crew is attacked by hostile native tribes who capture Ann and offer her as a sacrifice to their jungle deity: Kong (brought to life via motion-capture by Andy Serkis), the last of a giant species of ape. While the crew mounts a harrowing rescue mission through a jungle filled with dinosaurs and gigantic insects, Ann discovers a mutual connection with Kong. The huge, lonely beast, initially ferocious, becomes captivated by Ann’s grace and ability to make him laugh, forming a surprisingly tender, non-sexual relationship. Denham, seeing the ultimate spectacle, succeeds in capturing Kong and transporting him back to New York City as “The Eighth Wonder of the World” for a Broadway show. Of course, the creature breaks free in a furious rampage through Manhattan, seeking the only person he cares about, leading to the famous, tragic final confrontation atop the Empire State Building.
