​The film transports us to New York in 1933, amidst the gloom of the Great Depression. We are introduced to three main figures: the ambitious, morally flexible filmmaker Carl Denham (Jack Black), who is desperate to finish his picture; the struggling, down-on-her-luck vaudeville actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), whom Denham convinces to be his leading lady; and the serious playwright Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody), who has deep feelings for Ann. Denham tricks them all into boarding the tramp steamer SS Venture bound for a mysterious, unmapped location: Skull Island.

​Upon arrival, the crew is attacked by hostile natives and discovers that the entire island is a land forgotten by time, crawling with gigantic, prehistoric creatures. Ann is soon abducted by the natives and offered as a sacrifice to their god—a colossal, 25-foot-tall silverback gorilla known as Kong (masterfully performed by Andy Serkis). A desperate rescue mission is mounted, but Ann, initially terrified, begins to realize that Kong is not just a monster, but a highly intelligent, intensely lonely, and deeply emotional creature. Ann and Kong develop a profound, moving, and tragic bond. Denham, obsessed with his film, manages to capture the subdued ape and transports him back to New York to be put on display as “Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World,” a decision that inevitably leads to chaos, destruction, and a legendary, heartbreaking finale atop the Empire State Building.
