​The film stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, a surgeon whose fascination with the boundary between life and death leads him to construct an eight-foot-tall being from the remains of deceased criminals. However, upon witnessing the “birth” of his creation (Jacob Elordi), Victor is repulsed by the creature’s appearance and abandons it. The narrative takes a unique turn by focusing on the creature’s lonely search for acceptance and the figure of Dr. Pretorious (Christoph Waltz), who tracks the monster forty years after its creation to continue Victor’s “unfinished” experiments.

​As the creature learns the nuances of human speech and emotion—often through a poignant friendship with a blind man (David Bradley)—it also learns the sting of rejection. The story becomes a cycle of vengeance as the creature targets those Victor loves, including Elizabeth (Mia Goth), forcing the scientist to confront the fact that the true “monster” may be the one who abandoned his own child. Del Toro utilizes his signature gothic style to create a world of ruin and mystery, emphasizing the themes of isolation and the hubris of playing God.
