The story begins in rural Spain at a training farm for fighting bulls, Casa del Toro. While his peers, particularly the bullish Valiente (Bobby Cannavale), dream of glory in the bullfighting ring, the young calf Ferdinand only wants to smell flowers and be left alone. After his father is chosen by a matador but never returns, Ferdinand runs away, eventually finding a loving home on a quiet flower farm with a young girl named Nina and her father, Juan.
Ferdinand grows into an immense, powerful bull but retains his gentle, flower-loving nature (voiced perfectly by John Cena). His peaceful existence is shattered when, after a harmless misunderstanding at a flower festival in town, he is mistaken for a dangerous beast and is forcibly returned to Casa del Toro. There, he is reunited with his competitive childhood rivals and meets new allies, including the zany “calming goat,” Lupe (Kate McKinnon), and a team of resourceful hedgehogs. Realizing the dark truth—that all bulls, whether they fight well or not, are destined for the slaughterhouse if they don’t impress the matador—Ferdinand rallies his new friends for a daring escape. The climax culminates in a thrilling, emotional showdown in Madrid’s famous Las Ventas arena against the world’s greatest matador, El Primero (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), where Ferdinand must rely on his pacifism, not his horns, to survive.
