​The movie is set against the backdrop of a suburban Denver neighborhood in 1978, which is being terrorized by a serial child abductor and murderer dubbed “The Grabber.” Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), a shy and often-bullied 13-year-old, lives with his psychic sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), and their abusive, alcoholic father. After watching several of his friends disappear, Finney is lured away and becomes the Grabber’s latest victim.

​Finney awakens in a grimy, soundproof basement. His only companion is a mysterious, disconnected black rotary phone on the wall. The Grabber (Ethan Hawke, in a terrifying, masked performance) subjects Finney to cruel mind games, taunting him to attempt escape. The real horror begins when the dead phone starts to ring. When Finney answers, he hears the faint, static-laden voices of the Grabber’s slain victims. Each ghost—including his friend Robin (Miguel Cazarez Mora) and other boys like Bruce and Billy—uses their last fragments of memory and experience in that basement to provide Finney with vital clues, one by one, that might just lead him to freedom. Meanwhile, Finney’s sister, Gwen, uses her inherited psychic dreams to try and guide the police to her brother’s location, desperately racing against time to save him from the masked killer.
