The film immediately thrusts the audience back into the 15th-century setting, with the warrior Tien (Tony Jaa) suffering horrific capture and torture at the hands of the power-hungry Lord Rajasena. Here, he is placed under the care of Master Bua (Nirut Sirichanya), who initiates Tien into a rigorous regimen of spiritual healing, meditation, and a unique form of movement based on traditional Khon dance. This “soft style” training is not about physical strength but about achieving internal balance and conquering his inner demons (karma).
While Tien is recovering and finding his “center,” the greater kingdom is being plunged into darkness by the rise of the sinister dark mystic, Bhuti Sangkha (Dan Chupong), who has successfully usurped the throne from Lord Rajasena. Bhuti Sangkha is a formidable, almost supernatural, opponent who embodies dark magic. The film builds toward an inevitable final confrontation between the spiritually reborn Tien and the demonic Bhuti Sangkha, pitting pure martial arts skill and spiritual enlightenment against overwhelming dark power. The finale is a breathtaking showcase of Tony Jaa’s prowess, blending his signature bone-crunching Muay Thai with fluid, dance-like movements.
