The story is set in the waters off the coast of Cape Town, where a colony of Cape fur seals lives in constant fear of a gang of ruthless Great White sharks led by the menacing Grimes (Matthew Rhys). Our protagonist, Quinn (Jessie T. Usher), is a tenacious seal who has had enough of hiding. After his best friend Benji is eaten during a hunt, Quinn vows to stop the sharks once and for all. However, the rest of the colony, led by the cautious Brick (John Kani), believes that “staying safe” means staying hidden.
Undeterred, Quinn seeks out the help of Claggart (J.K. Simmons), a grizzled veteran seal who was once part of an elite military unit. With Claggart’s help, Quinn recruits a team of misfits: the eccentric rock-licker Beth (Kristen Schaal), the boastful but cowardly Geraldo (Patrick Warburton), and the gadget-loving Switch (Sharlto Copley). Together, they utilize sunken human artifacts and military-style training to form the “Seal Team.” The film is a hilarious and heart-pumping journey as these clumsy seals transform into a tactical unit capable of outsmarting the apex predators of the deep. It’s a classic underdog story filled with puns, creative action sequences, and a message about finding the courage to stand up for your community.
